Sinn Fein says will oppose any deal that undermines peace deal

  • Theresa May to talk with Northern Ireland parties amid concerns over DUP deal

But Major, who was leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister between 1990 and 1997, said he was "wary" and "dubious" of any deal with the DUP at a time where talks are about to resume on the state of the devolved government in the province.

Both parties are committed to a strengthening British unity, delivering Brexit, combating terrorism, and delivering prosperity, the source said, adding however that "at the moment there isn't a deal".

Former Tory Prime Minister John Major has spoken out against Theresa May's intent to prop up a government with the support of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

They say the British government's independence will be compromised in the talks aimed at restoring power sharing in the north, particularly if Northern Secretary James Brokenshire chairs the Stormont talks.

We could face years of stalling and stonewalling before the majority of people in Northern Ireland can get the changes they desire.

"We will oppose any deal which undermines the Good Friday agreement", Sinn Fein's president, Gerry Adams, told reporters outside May's Downing Street residence.

DUP leader Arlene Foster, who travelled to Westminster for talks with the Tories on Tuesday, said she hoped a deal could be reached "sooner rather than later".

In a statement afterwards, Mrs May said that "good progress" had been made and an agreement was possible if there was "good will on all sides".

It means that Mrs May will remain as prime minister and the DUP MPs will be central to the survival of a Conservative Party administration.

"And the question arises, if they cease to be seen as such by part of the community in Northern Ireland, then one can't be quite certain how events will unwind".

"The two issues - Northern Ireland and Brexit - might end up making the other more hard, in a vicious circle", Usherwood said.

A partnership between the Conservatives and the DUP may threaten the ability of the British government to be a neutral broker between the unionists and the nationalists, Mr Jonathan Powell, former chief British government negotiator on Northern Ireland, wrote in The Guardian.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood warned that the future of Northern Ireland could not be left "in the hands of a Tory-DUP government".

Shadow Defence Secretary Nia Griffiths told Pink News: "We want to see proper LGBT rights across the United Kingdom, and here we have a party that has consistently opposed LGBT equality deciding the government".

Downing Street sources told our correspondent talk of a delay in announcing a deal was "not coming from us".
