  • Trump condemns fatal stabbing of good Samaritans in Portland

The suspect, Jeremy Joseph Christian, a 35-year-old convicted felon, faces charges including aggravated murder, attempted murder, intimidation and being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon. You got no safe place. At a "free speech" march in Portland, he draped himself in an American flag and made a series of derogatory remarks.

A white supremacist charged with the murder of two men shouted "death to the enemies of America" as he appeared in court for the first time. "Leave this country if you hate our freedom", he added. You call it terrorism, I call it patriotism! "You hear me? Die", Christian screamed while being led out of the court.

TEMPLETON: Well, all of this stems from an incident Friday when the suspect boarded a MAX train and then, according to witnesses, began to direct a biased rant against two teenage girls, one of whom was wearing a hijab, and then proceeded to stab the men who tried to intervene. Two of the men, 53-year-old Rick John Best and 23-year-old Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, died. Authorities say Christian started verbally abusing two young women, including one wearing a hijab.

Christian's next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, June 7 at 9:30 a.m.

The affidavit also claimed Christian could be be heard on surveillance video in a police patrol vehicle admitting to stabbing three people in the neck.

Prosecutors say he attacked them after they confronted him for harassing two young black women, one of whom wore a Muslim head covering. Suddenly, she said, Christian hit the phone away and stabbed Namkai-Meche in the neck.

Christian says he went to school through ninth grade, but passed the high school equivalency exam commonly known as the G.E.D. and took some community college classes.

Since Trump's election, Portland has led all major metropolitan areas in reported hate crimes, Mayor Ted Wheeler's office said.

Asha Deliverance, the mother of Mr Namkai-Meche, has written an open letter calling on Donald Trump to address Islamophobia.

Please condemn any acts of violence, which result directly from hate speech & hate groups.

"You have said that you will be President for all Americans".

Christian is now being held at the Multnomah County Jail on 2 counts of aggravated murder, 2 counts of second-degree intimidation, 3 counts of unlawful use of a weapon and one count each of attempted aggravated murder and first-degree assault.

Fletcher acknowledged "of course we need to support" the three men who defended the girls, thanking donors and well-wishers for their support - but stressed that "we need to remember this is about those little girls". One protester asked: "Why are you protecting Nazis?"
