Sessions' testimony to Congress Tuesday to be open to public

14 June, 2017, 07:12 | Author: Simon Thompson

Fired FBI director James Comey's version of a critical February 14 encounter with President Donald Trump gets it first test on Tuesday when Attorney General Jeff Sessions will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee. The newspaper noted that it doesn't exclude the possibility of recordings created by another entity.

Comey said last week that the bureau had information about Sessions - before he recused himself from overseeing the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election - that would have made it "problematic" for him to be involved in the probe.

"I would like to invite the president to testify before the Senate", Schumer said.

Asked when the announcement would come, Spicer replied, "When the president is ready to make it".

Comey testified that the FBI investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign did not extend to Trump himself during the time Comey was leading the FBI. Some Democrats say that recusal should have also applied to the Comey firing - since President Trump has made clear he fired Comey in part because of the Russian Federation probe.

Members of his party now seeming to show a bit of support in the Russia-Flynn investigation.

During his own testimony last week, Comey said that he understood Trump's request "to be a directive".

But there are also questions about meetings that Sessions had with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak, who has emerged as a key figure in the question of whether any Trump associates had ties to Russian officials.

Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., jointly announced that Sessions would testify on new developments Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. ET "in open session".

Comey testified last week that Trump shooed Sessions out of the Oval Office so he could be alone with Comey, then asked Comey to back off the FBI's investigation of fired national security adviser Michael Flynn.

There is no doubt senators on the committee have been preparing for his testimony, but here are the questions to Sessions that will be critical in determining his fate.

"(Sessions) believes it is important for the American people to hear the truth directly from him and looks forward to answering the committee's questions tomorrow", Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said Monday.

Comey also testified that later, he implored "the attorney general to prevent any future direct communication between the president and me".

"I know him to be an honorable man, and I think this is just a chance for him to put all that to rest", Cornyn said.

There are growing calls for the tapes of the president's conversations with former FBI Director James Comey to be released.

Comey said during congressional testimony last week that he hopes they exist because they would vindicate his account of their interactions, and the events that led to his firing.

As news of his testimony broke, Sessions attended a Cabinet meeting with Trump at the White House.

Mr Trump had himself attributed his dismissal of Mr Comey to the Russian Federation investigation.

The White House has already acknowledged that Sessions will not hesitate to invoke executive privilege, which may limit knowledge-sharing quite a bit. Did he do anything after being asked by Comey?
