Athletics: Sotherton wins medal for Beijing

  • Sotherton set for bronze medal

The medal would also be the second reallocated to her from the Beijing Games after she and her Great Britain team-mates were upgraded to third place in the women's 4x400 metres in November.

British Olympian Kelly Sotherton is living proof of that - the ex-heptathlete learned that she is set to be upgraded to Olympic bronze in the heptathlon for her efforts at Beijing in 2008 after Russian Tatyana Chernova was stripped of the medal after testing positive for a steroid.

The 40-year-old from the Isle of Wight retired from athletics in 2012 having won medals at Commonwealth, European, Olympic and world level, indoors and outdoors.

Chernova had already served another doping ban that saw her stripped of Olympic bronze at London in 2012 and the 2011 world title from Daegu in South Korea.

But she was not the only Russian sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee on Monday as 400m runner Maksim Dyldin was disqualified from the 2012 Games in London, for testing positive for the same anabolic steroid.

Britain's Sotherton also placed fifth in the 4x400-meter relay at Beijing and could be upgraded to bronze in that event due to doping by the Russian Federation and Belarus teams.

Samples are stored for a decade, and for the 2008 and 2012 re-tests Russian Federation has had the most positive cases per nation. On Monday, nearly nine years after the Beijing Games, she got a call to tell her that she had been upgraded to a bronze medal. Russian Federation accounts for 37 of those, with Belarus second on 16, Kazakhstan 12 and Ukraine 11.
