"My babies! My babies!" screamed a woman who neighbors said lost her 2-year-old son and 9-year-old brother in the blaze. A sixth person was home but escaped by jumping out of a window on the second floor. He stopped and got out of his vehicle - only to see a firefighter carrying a badly burned young child from the "very intense" fire.

A neighboring home also caught fire and was badly damaged, but no one was inside at the time.

Neighbor Dorothy Murray told reporters that when she looked out her door and saw the fire, "I could have fainted". It was heartbreaking. The fire was very intense.

The whole block was thick with smoke and she could feel the heat emanating from the fire, Murray said.

First-responders carried a limp child from the wreckage. The guy who was carrying the baby out, you could just see the stress on his face. "I'm just emotional about it because I'm a grandfather and I have kids, too".

Denise Coleman said the firefighters struggled to rescue several children. "They were trying to get the people out of the house but they couldn't get in fast enough to get them out".
